In aircraft traffic-number point of view, the largest part of the aircraft traffic served in our airport is composed of pilot training flights. For instance in 2021, the number of training flight performed is 4020 flights. This is followed by the international flights with the primary destination as Brussels, while there are also scheduled/non-scheduled flights for other Erupoean destinations (Brugge, Lyons, Köln, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam) as well as Hajj and Umrah. The first flight to Brussels started in 2005, whereas the Hajj and Umrah flights started in 2012.
As well known, the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively affected the aviation industry, from the beginning of 2020. According to the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) data, the all-world air traffic in 2020 decreased by 60% on average with respect to those for 2019, and this decrease was only drew back to 49% in 2021. To the projections made in the line of some positive indicators in aviation industry, at the end of 2022, it is estimated that this decrease will be 26-30% with respect to those for 2019.
It is noted that the effect of COVID Pandemic in our airport remained below the all-world average, as about 40% of decrease in passenger traffic from 2020 to 2019. However, in 2021, our airport has been completely recovered from the Pandemic effects and the passenger traffic has reached to 99,172, that is almost the highest traffic occured ever in our aiport, in 2018, as 99,822 (flights in 2018 includes Hajj and Umrah flights, whereas it is not the case in 2021).
